Postdocs Appreciation Series: Launch & Networking Event Recap

On September 27th 2024, we successfully coordinate the Postdocs Appreciation Series: Launch & Networking Event, bringing together postdoctoral researchers from various institutions across Luxembourg. The event, held at the “BlackBox“ (Maison des Sciences Humaines, Esch-Belval), aimed to foster dialogue around the unique challenges postdocs face and explore career development opportunities.

Highlights

Engaging Brainstorming Session:

The event kicked off with an interactive brainstorming session where postdocs shared their expectations for the Appreciation Series. Using the online platform Mentimeter, participants expressed what they value most about being postdocs—independence, freedom, and the opportunity to conduct their own research—while also acknowledging the uncertainties surrounding their future.

Pitch Presentations by Key Organizations:

Representatives from various organizations, including EURAXESS, FNR, IcoRSA, Luxinnovation, and ADEM, delivered insightful presentations on support schemes available to postdocs. They provided valuable information on funding, innovation opportunities, career transitions, and the rights of residence and work in Luxembourg. Postdocs appreciated learning about new career paths and services that they hadn’t been aware of before.

Networking Cocktail:

The evening concluded with a vibrant networking session where participants had the opportunity to engage directly with speakers and representatives. Postdocs expressed gratitude for the chance to connect with these key stakeholders and with each other, discussing their personal experiences beyond the academic sphere.

Key Takeaways

  • Postdocs are keen to see more events like this, as such opportunities for engagement and shared learning are rare.
  • There is a clear demand for more support in transitioning from academia to other sectors, with a focus on non-academic project management and entrepreneurship training.
  • Alumni expressed interest in maintaining access to the public institution resources and training programs even after their contracts end, highlighting the need for ongoing support during career transitions.

We’re grateful to all the speakers and participants who made this event a success. The Postdocs Appreciation Series will continue to provide a platform for postdocs to voice their needs, learn about career opportunities, and foster meaningful connections.
